He has lost a lawsuit he instituted to recover certain presents given to his former fianceo during tlieir engagement, which has now abruptly terminated. Mr. Hayes stated in Court that he had purchased a number of things for the prospective home, besides giving defendant many valuable presents, and entrusting her with money to tho amount of £100, of which ho had only £D 0 returned to him. Ho hart broken his engagement with Miss Regan owing to the fact that sho persisted in going to a picnic against his emphatic wish, Ho desired to regain possession of a suito of furniture, which ho valued at £8 10s., and a diamond engagement ring, worth £5 10s. The defendant's story put another complexion on the case. She said sho had known Hayes for four years, and hud been engaged to him thrco years. At tho beginning of each year they were to have been marri»d, but at the last moment ho always found ho had not sufficient cash to proceed with tho undertaking. Over and over again she hid krat him money. The very furnituro for which no was suing had been, purchased with her money. Since tho termination of their engagement, complainant had written thrco times'seeking to have it renewed. The Stipendiary Magistrate said Hayes had not established his claim with regard to- the furnituro, and ho had no moro risht to expect tho return of the ring than any other gift. Therefore, the case was dismissed, with £2 2s. costs, a week boing allowed Hayes in which to pay.
