THE CITY'S SPORTS GROUNDS.
RESERVES AVAILABLE.
DUPPA STREET AND KELBTJRNE PARK. Further consideration has boon givon by the Reserves Committee of tho City Council to tho question of what grounds will bo available for tho uso of sports bodies this winter, and it has been decided to recommend tho council \ to permit athletic games to bo played on Kelburnc Park and Duppa Street. Tho committed thinks that hockey, association football, and la erosso could be played without interfering with tho grounds, but tho question regarding Rugby has not been determined; it all depends on what tho turf would stand. The votaries of other games urge that football is impracticable jon. Kelhunio Part, especially on windy days, as tho ball may bo blown down towards Wellington Terrace, and there is nothing in tho way of netting to prevent it. _ . Of course, dressing . sheds, and latrino accommodation will have to bo provided, and tho oommittec will- see that propel facilities of this nature aro built, 'iho sheds will no doubt bo of a modest character until such time as the council has sufficient money to erect pavilions in keep ing with tho grounds, and development ot sport in tho city and suburbs. . The question of tbo suitability of Anderson Park as a sports ground also arises. Ono authority holds the opinion that although it is rather too rough for matchei to bo played on, there is no reason why it should not bo used for practices _ or for junior or third-class matches. Cricket and football havo been played on tho ground. Tho grass, ho says, is all self-sown, not a sixpence having been spent in seed. The allocation of tho grounds available to the various sports bodios is now being dealt with, and tho committee will bring down a report to Thursday's meeting of tho City Council. At tho dinner tendered on Saturday even ing to tho visiting Wairarapa schoolboy crickot team, reference was mado to thr question of playing grounds, as reported :a another column.
