' About twenty residents of Waimato as--1 semblcd last Wednesday afternoon to bid 1 farewell to Mr. J. Fleming, teller of tho 1 Bank of New Zealand, who has been trans--1 ferred to Wellington. Mr. Fleming was presented with a gold chain and pendant, and several complimentary Speeches wero mado. Mr. C. W. Hursthouse, Chief Engineer of Roads, who will rotiro at the end of the present month, is to be entertained by tho staff of tho office with which ho has been identified for so many years, and is to ho presented with a tangible proof of tho esteem in which he is held by his departmental associates. At a well represented meeting of the Jewish community, held on Saturday morning, Mr. J. Mandel, president, being in the chair, the Rev. H. Van Stavercn was unanimously re-appointed minister for a further term of seven years, after 32 years' service. Reference was made by Messrs. Mandel, F. Cohen, D. J. and P. J. Nathan, P. Levi, Judah Myers, A. Beaver, and others, to the valuable services rendered by the Rev. Mr. Van Staveren to the community, and to tho high esteem in which ho is'held by tho congregation. Mr. R. C. Drummond, headmaster of tho Clarevillo School, near Carterton, has been appointed to the charge of the now school at Lansdowno, Masterton. Mr. Drummond commenced his professional -career as a pupil teacher at Mount Cook Boys' School, under Mr. C. A. Hardy, 8.A., and was afterwards a junior assistant master at the same school. Later, he was appointed to the charge of tho To Horo School, then to Parkvale, and theneo to his present position at Clarevillo. Mr. Drummond has long been recognised as ono of the most successful teachers in the beard's son-ice, and is very popular in the Wairarapa district.
