COMMONWEALTH WOOL FREIGHTS. During the present wool season, tlio Clan Line of steamers have saved the wool-growers in Australasia a considerable sum of money by carrying wool to Home and Continental ports at a low figure. The Olan Chattan, which left Sydney on March 9 for Calais, Dunkirk, and London, took 16.7C8 bales of wool, in addition to a largo quantity of general cargo, the returns of which arc not yet to hand. No other Clan liner being reportod to load on the berth at Sydney this season, the freights have jumped from Id. per lb. to id. per lb., plus the usual primage.

NEW COMBINATION STEAMER. ,/ From Belfast to Liverpool and hack waq tho first voyage made by tho Laurentio, the new combination steamer of the White Star Line. The arrival of tho vessel in the Mersey created a good deal of interest, accustomed-though the port is to big steamers, and for'the very Rood reason that this, the first combination steamer built to traverse the North Atlantic, is to have Liverpool as her home port. A wireless message sent from the Laurentio to Belfast was in the following terms: "Trials of new combination reciprocating and turbine engines of. Laurentio highly successful in all respects," On tho faith oLthis telegram the'statement has boon made that it may now be regarded as a certainty that tho <S,CCO-ton. leviathans Olympic and Titanic will be similarly. propelled. That, to say the least, is a little premature. Something will obviously depend on the full results of the Laureutic's trials. On the other hand, Mr. Ismay and Lord Pirrie have always been credited with tho intention of introducing tho combination principle iuto the leviathans if the present experiment succeeds. The now boat is due to sail on her first voyago to Canada on April 29.

THE BATTLE OF .THE BUILDING YARDS. Rcgardine the outnut of warships', Lloyd's figures clearly show that the British output lias been decreasing, while foreign production is more than maintained (says " Engineering"). Only in exceptional years has the total warship tonnucrc launched in Britain been less'.tllan half that of the collective output of all foreign countries, but for tho past year it. is less.than one-third, notwithstanding the inclusion in the British total of a larger proportion than usual of foreign tonnage. The British total for the past year ife only 49.ESQ tons—less than in any year since the beginning of the century, and little more than one-third that of the previous year, ar.d one-fourth of the year of maximum output. Germany, on the other hand, has built for her own navy two tor.s \ for every ton launched for the King's Navy, their total beinnr 97,660 tons, which is the largest on record, and compares with 14,5C0 to"s in the previous year, and 02,678 tons in 19CG. The United States, whieh comes r.ext on the list, liavo increased their total, as compared v)it.h the previous year, nearly five-fold, although it is less than in several preceding ycars-notably 19D4, when the output was 170,000 t,on«c. In 1908 there were launched for the United States Navy eight vessels, of 52.850 tons, which is nearly S€CO tons in excess of the tonnage of British warshins. The total number of warships launched in the world was 127, of 3f9,6R9 tons, of whieli Britair. built for her own and other navies 36 vessels, of 74,186 tons.

The local agents of the vessels trading to Blcnhein advise that the bur at that port 13 In very bad order at the present time. To-day the Mon. leaves for Wanganui, ard will bo followed or. Monday bv the steamer Stormbird, which is due from Wangar.ui to-day. At 5 p.m. to-day the_ New. Zealand Shipping Comnany'fi steamer Waimate leaves Wellington for Lvttelton. The Tongariro sails finally from Lyttelton for London next week. Tho Mauretania has again beaten her own record, with a day's run of 636 knots, which Is one more than her previous best. The Lusitania's record for the westward voynpe is 4 dn.ys 15 hours; the Haurctatiia'a 4 days 20 hours 13 minutes. It ia understood that 'the Tiiverina will continue on the running of the TJlimaroa .until the litter has beer, repaired and rer.omraissioned. Tho fiivorina leaves Sydney for Wellington today, and will proceed from this port to Melbourne, via Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, and Hobart. It was expected that the Mapourika would leave Westport at 4 p.m. yesterday, for Nelson and Wellington. Tho Kaituna leaves Lyttelton to-day for Wellington, and tho Kir.i leaves Westport today for Wellington. The steamers Poherua, for Napier, Kaiapoi and Kittawa, for Lyttelton. and Ivomata (destination not disclosed) leave Welling, ton to-day. The ne-.v Iluddart-Parker steamer Werribee, intended for the coal trade, is the largest vessel turned out by tho Myth Shipbuilding Company. Tho Werribeo loaded general cargo at Middlesbornush, and sailed or. January 23 for Australia, A feature of is the deck machinery, comprising Wn steam \yinches' (" Liverpool" tyuel and friction wip.chcs, and powerful steam H'inchcs and steam steering gear. An exchange reports that tho discovery of a yellow streak in tho Gulf Stream was reported by Captain Pederson, of. tlio Norwegian steamer Karen, which arrived at Now York 011 January 14 from Porto Cabello. When crossing the current 100 miles ofT the Capo of Virginia the captain said he passed through a streak of yellow water three miles wids and extending beyond tho horizon, both north-east and south-west. The appearance of the water was like that of a muddy river, and is beliovcd to have been due to a submarine earthquake in the vicinity. A sample of tho yellow water was secured by Captain Pederson, and submitted to scientists at Now York (or examination.
