(FnOM ODE SPECIAL ItErOItTEB.) o UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD. The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt Town Board was attended by Commissioners Benge (chairman), Craig, Keys, Martin, Wilkie, and Williams. An apology was received from. Commissioner Harrison, and leave of absence granted. The clerk reported that the board's solicitors had lodged a caveat objecting.to the issue of a L.T. title to land beyond the Wakatike Road, should such land prove not to be a portion of swtion 180, llimutaka. The Works Committee reported the acceptance of a tender for three hundred yards of metal, to be stacked for winter use on the main road, and also a further supply for immediate use in road.repairs. The prico was 2s. per cubic yard delivered. The action of the committee was endorsed. It was decided to invite tenders for the supply of metal to connect William Street with Martin Street. It was decided to cancel the joint and several guarantee entered into by the members of the town board personally for an overdraft with thq Bank of New Zealand. The clerk reported the issue of two permits for new dwellings, and that an application for now shop premises would be lodged next day. It was decided to inform two residents that the building fees; must be paid in respect of erection of outbuildings without delay, otherwise proceedings would be taken for breach of tho building by-laws. It was reported that a resident was plying for hire and carrying passengers during the recent Rifle - Association meeting, and that a local storekeeper had entered into competition' with the licensed carriers in 'removing furniture. In each case it was decided to call upon the person to pay thrco months' license fee for the vehicle employed, or dofend an action for broach of tho by-law relating to vehicles. It was decided that failure to pay tho dog tax before April 30 would result in legal proceedings being taken against defaulters. •The clerk announced that 43 summonses had been issued already against defaulting ratepayers, and that*a further batch of summonses were in hand, and would be issued against all who had not paid the second instalment of rates. According to his estimate, only about 30s. would not be recoverable, and that amount would be spread among a dozen holders of very small allotments whose place of abode could not be ascertained. Tho Works Committee was directed to make an examination of the lower end of' the Ebdentown Road and report upon what was needed in regard to the roadway and the old bridge there. . The clerk was engaged for a further term of twelve months, and the salary was fixed at £70 per annum. It was anticipated that a credit balance of between £100 and £150 would be shown at the end of the financial year. Tho clerk reported that according to the newspaper report of tho meeting of the Hospital Board, the Upper Hutt Town Board would be called upon to pay £84 15s. upon its valuation of £191,863, as compared with £66 17s.—the contribution of the much older Town. Board of Johnsonville, the valuation of which was £151,398. JOTTINGS. Two first offenders for drunkenness were convicted and discharged at Lower Hutt Polico Court yesterday morning. Mr. John Cudby, J.P., presided. Tho second heat of the Petone Rowing Club's double sculls was rowed last evening, J. Nuttall (str.) and E. Parr (bow) defeating R. Inglis (str.) and L. Drummond (bow) by about half a length. The third heat will take place to-night if the weather permits. Councillor W. H. Russell, of Lower Hutt, has been confined to his bed with influenza for the past few days. At the end of next week he will commence an activo campaign in connection with his candidature for the -Hutt mayoralty. Meetings of the Hutt Valley Tramway Board are at present held every Friday, alternately at Lower Hutt and Petone. Tonight there will be discussion on the notice of motion handed in by Mr. J. Austin that meetings be held once a fortnight on Friday evenings. A deputation will wait on the Petone Borough Council on Monday evening to make representations for tho allotment of grounds for Association football.
