» . POLICE CASES. (Before Mr. AV. G. Riddell, S.M.) For insobriety two male first offenders wcro convicted and fined 55., in default 2-f hours' imprisonment. Daniel Griffin and John O'Brien, who had been previously convicted, were fined 10s., with,the altcrnutivo of 18 hours' imprisonment. James AVilson, who had two convictions against his name, was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. A BECOBD IN MISDEMEANOUE. Convictions to the number of 83 were recorded against the name of Olivia Carnell, | who was charged on remand with being au idio and disorderly person, in that she was without sufficient lawlul'means of support. On her previous appearance accused was granted a remand since she stated that sko could procure evidence to prove that sho nad been working recently. Yesterday, however, tho sum total of her lawful labours was reported to bo one day. His Worship imposed a conviction and sentence of three months' imprisonment. ACCOSTING TEE PRISON GANG, Two charges were preferred against Jamef Northcy, to both of which he pleaded guilty. In connection with the first charge of damaging a pauo of glass, valued at 10s., tho property of John Peter Evans, Sub-Inspector Phair stated that accused went to Mr. Evans's house, and demanded a drink. When this was refused him ho went outside, and smashed the window of tho house. The second charge was .one of using insulting lnnguago at the-corner of Abel Smith Street and Cuba Street. As tho prisoners were being marched from Mount Cook Barracks to the gaol, accused commenced to shout and beckon to them, and, when cautioned by tho warder, used insulting language. Sub-Inspector Phair stated that accused waa an old gaol-bird with 43 previous convictions. On the first charge a sentence of 14 prisonment was imposed, and,, on the second, a conviction and fino of <£3, in default 21 days' imprisonment. IMPROPER LANGUAGE'. On a charge of using obscene language in Penrose Avenue, Henry Edwards was convicted and fined £b, in default 21 days' imprisonment. ' '
