Big Eiver 1 Iβ 0 2 0 0 — SOUTH AFRICAN TRADE. The trade figures of British South Africa for 1908 naturally show a shrinkage in comparison with those of the preceding year. ■ Imports arc less by X 2,057,000, whilst exoorts of South African produce have diminished by .£2,388J'.M, the total volume of trade being' ,£71.412,392, ibout G per cent, less than the total of -1907; Of the exports, gold contributes" about 70 per cent., and diamonds 10 per cent, tho falling off .in. tho i> latter .last year ro■>re.senting ,£i,ooo,flOO approximately. The explanation for this ; heavy decrease in diamonds ?an be found in tho American financial crisis, Vhich extinguished tho demand for such luxuries. Ths De Beers Company sold no diamonds, between February and June, 1908, and its total realisations for that year amounted . lo .-£3,351.500, against .£0,452,500 in 1007. Tho profit of this organisation f0r,1908 was ;£72-J,IG:), to meet dividend on preference capital .£BOO,OOO, And accumulated British; income tax of .£477,432, representing , ,six years', , claims hitherto disputed. The'deferred shareholders in Do Beers received noi dividend,;% against .£1,750,000 in 3907, but the current'j.ycar opens more hopefully for bath tho diaiiiond industry and South Africa generally. '■■■■■ .- .""■ -' ' ' ;■' FROZEN' MEAT. The depressed condition of the frozen" meat market for several weeks past has been very discouraging. ': The Higli Commissioner's, cablo message to '.the Department of Industries and Commerce, published yfeterday, states that tlvo mutton market is depressed, with scarcely any demand, and supplies are increasing. The lamb market is dull, a large supply-of Iloinekilled mutton is nftcctiiig this market.' Looking back on the High Commissioner's .-cables, ever since "the beginning of the year the market reports have been adverse, and as supplies havo steadily increaso',l values havo receded. Tho farmers* have already had to submit to a reduction frqiii 13s. 3d. to 12?. Gd. por head, anda further reduction in tho price of fat stock is pending if it has not already-cpme into force. The freezing companies in Wellington havo been rushed with stock, and it'is;belioved that both tho local companies have,. been■ operating to ths full capacity of their plant,, It is: gome satisfaction that the companies' ate financially.
