The delay in finishing the new dock, at Dunedin has boon responsible for tho calling into existence- of various omotions, as dozens and dozens of vessels departed to other ports for docking, vvhilo the money lost to Port l operatives was refunded from rates and other charges to meet the interest on the now dock loan. The popular feeling at Port Chalmers (says tho "Star") has been one of resentment, especially when the TJlimaroa had to go to Lyttelton for docking through tho new dock not being ready for ships sonic twelve months aftc. tho contract time for completing it had expired. This feeling is not effaced by the latest reports to hand, which go to show that had tho Ulimaroa been docked at Dunedin tho guarantors for tho interest on tho dock loan would have been relieved of all payments for a year. This loss, together with tho loss of thousands of pounds to labour, is stimulating a'growing impression that an inquiry should bo held to ascertain tho causes of the delay and as to the best moans of getting the dock opened for business. A number of boilcnnakers from Port Chalmers have gone to Lyttelton to work at tho repairing of tho Ulimaroa.
