Speaking at tho complimentary social tendered Mr. John Stevens at Marton , this evening, Sir Joseph Ward mado several important announcements with roferenco to tho reorganisation of tho High .Commissioner's Oflico in London. Mr. Walter Konnawny, secrotary to the High Commissioner, who had been in tho üblic service for 40 years, was on tho iroint of retiring under the ago limit. Ho (tho Primo Minister) desired to publicly acknowledge tho good work dono in his position.' To fill his place tho Government had appointed Mr. Palliscr, who, for many years, hatl boon audit officer in London, and a matt of largo experience. After conference with tho Auditor-Gene-ral, Mr. T. H. l'lamcr, Under-Sccretary for Mines, who has had a long and honourable career in tho service of tho New Zealand Government, had been appointed to succeed Mr. Pallisor. Both appointments wero carried out with tho full concurrence of tho Controller and Auditor-General. Tho development of trado between the Old Country and New Zealand both ways was a> matter of grent importance to the 'Dominion, and the regulation and control of immigration was also a matter which required tlforough attention. In order to havo an active oflicer from New Zealand, with local knowledge, to carry out theso duties, tho Government had appointed Mr. T. 15. Donne, tho present General Manager of tho Tourist Department, to fill this responsible position. Both Mr. Donno and Mr. Hamer would . leavo for London , at an early date. Sir Joseph Ward added that tho appointments meant only nn increase of £84 a, year in tho cost of tho High Commissioner's Office. MR. T. H. HAMERi Mr. Thomas Hutchinson Hainer, Undersecretary for Mines, was born in Auckland in 1855, his, father . being tho Rev. Thomas Earner of that city. Ho married, first, in 1883, Miss Isabella Rayner, of Hutb, and second, in 1833. a daughter of Mr. W. Dollimore, of.Lycll. He was educated at Wesley College, Auckland, and M'Rao's High School; entered tho Provincial Superintendent's Office, Auckland, in 1572, and, on tho abolition of the provinces, joined tho staff of tho Bauk of Now Zealand at the Thames. ■ In 1878 ho received the appointment of clork in tho Mines Department, and thereafter filled tho following positions: Acting-Undor-Secretary, 1887; Chief Clork on amalgamation with tho Department of Lands; privnto secretary to Mr. Scddon, January, 1891; Under-Secretary for Mines, 18C6. MR, T. E. DONNE. Mr. Thomas E. Donne, Superintendent of tho Department of Tourists and Health Resorts, was born in Melbourne, and educated at tho public schools of Now Zea- ■ land. Ho has held tho positions of Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, corresponding secretary for the New Zealand branch of tho commercial department of the British Board of Trade, and solo commissioner to arrange ftransport and accommodation for tho Duko and Duchess of Cornwall and York during their tour through Now Zealand in 1901. Ho represented New Zealand at the Louisiana Purchaso Exposition, St. Louis, 1904-5; visited tho United States of America, Great Britain, and Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy in connection with tho New Zealand International Exhibition, 1906-7, and Departments under his control. In connection with tho Exhibition ho acted as vice-president, and executive commissioner. In conjunction with }h. T. H. Hamor, ho acted: as Government Chief Commissioner on tho occasion of tho visit of the American Fleet to Auckland last year.
