NOTES AND COMMENTS, The Napier Cup will "bo decided nt Grcennieadows to-morrow. l'ony owners aro reminded that nominations for tho Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club's April meeting close at noon to-day. Tho two-year-old St. Felix (St. Ambrose Fanna) is entered for the Nursery Handicap at Tilnaru next week. This youngster was the most promising of tho first batch of St. Ambrose's foals, but he contracted influenza in the spring, and, in conscquencc, has not yet raced. It is worthy of note that while tho two-year-old race at Timarn only attracted four entries a similar class of racc nt the recent Dannevirko meeting closed with somo thirty nominations, and was contested by no fewer than fifteen juveniles. Serenade's recent rim of victories has resulted in his being set to concede weight to Lupulito, Sea King, and I'etrovna in a five-furlong race at the South Canterbury meeting. In addition to tho Napier Park Racing Club's meeting to-morrow, there will also be races at Shannou and at Opiinake. On Thursday tho Wnrrengato Jockey Club's meeting will take place on the club's course near Fordell. Tho English flat racing season commences next Monday with tho Lincoln Spring meeting, and on Tuesday tho Lincolnshire Hnndieap will be run., Tho Livorpool Grand National Steeplechase will be run at Aintree next. Friday week. North_ Head, Chantcuse, Gold Lace, Seatou Dale, Kairoma, and Berengaria, who were winners at last year's autumn meeting of tho Napier Park Racing Clnb, are all engaged at this year's fixture. King Post's yearling half-sister by Soult was shipped to Sydney from Auckland yesterday. Ulilando and Mahuta are the only two horses engaged in the Taranaki Cup that competed in last year's contest for the same race. Each has more weight to carry than he had in last year's race. ' | The three-year-old Master Soult, who has been sold to a Melbourne buyer, is a bay colt by Soult from Lady Hester. In his eight starts last season he won four races of a total valuo of .£405, and was only unplaced on one occasion. This season ho has been a consistent but a sonioivhat unlucky performer. Restarted twice at tho Avondalo Jockey Club's spring meeting, running second in the Flying Handicap and third in the Guineas. At the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting he won the Flying Handicap, and at Trentham a couple of weeks later he was second to Tiptoe in a sixfurlong race. Going 011 to Riccarton he ran second in the Stewards' Handicap, unplaced in tho Derby, second in the Jockey Club Handicap, and ho won tho Members' Handicap. His next appearance was at the Auckland Racing Club's summer where ho ran second in the Railway Handicap, won the Summer Cup, and ran second in the Great Northern Derby. The C.J.C. Derby is, therefore, the only race in which be has been unplaced this season, and in a total of nineteen starts in two seasons ho has only been twice unplaced. His owner. l ; received soveral offers for him, but refused all but the recent offer of 2200 cuineasj which is a handsome figure for the colt, when it is considered that tho groat Mooltan only realisM 2500 guineas and a contingency. Tho New Zealand-bred Cocky was among tho winners nt tho Lucknow (India) meeting on February 1. Auratus (Gold Reef—Pursering), . who has been oft the scene for a couple of seasons, is entered for the hurdlo races at the Trentham meoting. For both days' events at the Wellington Racing Club's Autumn meeting excellent nominations liavo been received, and the total of 417 for the fourteen handicap events exceeds last year's total by 89. Tho Thompson Handicap has filled with 52 entries, and next to this comes the Pacific Handicap, five furlongs, for two and three-year-olds, for which 45 youngsters have been entered, but perhaps tho most pleasin? feature of tho whole lot is the fact that tho two hurdlo races have each attracted close on thirty nominations. Mr. G. F. Moore's winnings at tho V.R.C. Meeting amounted to .£475. _ This was place money secured by Signor in his'three races. Mr. Fred Hill, a very old and respected resident of Mnsterton, died on Saturday afternoon from hemorrhago of the lungs. Tho lato Mr. Hill was an official of tho Mastcrton Racing Club, and one of tho most enthusiastic supporters and officials of tho Mastcrton Trotting Club. Tho New Zealand jockey, T. Cahill, who rodo Pilot in the March Steeplechase at Flomington, was fined JC2 for disobedience at tho post, and reprimandod for not riding his mount out. When tho result of tho Champion Stakes was cabled through to New Zealand tho tiuia for tho threo miles was stated as smin. 4sec., but Australian files to hand show that tho corrcct time was Sniin. 40sec. Signor finished very gamely and, according to somo accounts, ho might. haro reversed positions with Pendil if his jockey, If. Cameron, had not mistaken the winning post and ceased riding him somo 20 yards too soon. Somo of the spectators, on (ho other hand, contend that Camoron rode his mount right out. Tho "Roferoo" states that Signor will remain in Australia until after Easter in order to compete in the weight-for-age events at tho Australian Jockey Club's Autumn meeting.
