PETONE WORKSHOPS TROUBLE.
' OAR AND WAGON INSPECTORS. Tho monthly meeting of fclio Wellington branch' of tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants' was held iu tho Oddfellows' Hall, : Petone, on Friday evening, and was well attended.. Twenty now members wero elected. Lengthy discussion took placo on'the subject of tho alleged'injustice dono in appointing- Manawatu men to sonior positions in tho Railway Workshops. Tho attitude of tho men was stated to bo based-on principle, not on personal grounds. They urged a prompt adjustment. Members unauimously concurred in the opinion that every man who had been superseded by a newcomer from tho lato Manawatu Company had the. right to appeal. ' Tiio meeting resolved to make representations urging that all appointments to positions as car and wagon inspectors should bo mado from, carpenters. It was pointed out that some time ago this had been tho prac-tice,-blit recently, especially since tho West- ■ inghousq brake had beenj brought into use, tho proriiotions had been' given to men in other departments of the. workshops. Tho society asked that the carpenters bo put through some examination beforo receiving tfycir appointments. Thoro Wero so few avenuos of promotion open to carpenters that the'society considered it unfair for other tradesmen to be appointed car and wagon inspectors. It was decided to put the resolution; boforo tho Executive Council; 4md also to inform branches throughout, tho Dominion, in order that they might tako up tho matter.
