FIELD AND STREAM.

(By Dnr Ftr.) Fishing at Waikanao in tho moonlight recently, Mr. D. F. Neilson secured Gvo small trout on fly. There are many anglers who allege that fish will not feed when the moon, is up, but this theory has often been proved wrong. Mr. K. Widen grassed four trout, weighing about 61b. altogether, at Wainui last Sunday. On tlio previous trip lio secured 17 fish, averaging about Jib. each. Tlio absence of rain has made most of tho local streams practically unfishable. Tho green weed is again in evidence, and, in consequence, it is only the more- enthusiastic who venture, out. Tho Waikanao is reported to bo in a very low stale—as low as when the drought was at its height last season. Two anglers who fished at South Karori last week, for a full day's hard whipping, only grassed 10 small fish—a somewhat unusual eacth from this popular stream. Tho lowness of the stream and tho green weed are held responsible for the small basket. ' An experienced Ashbiirton angler statra that the present season lias boon most unsatisfactory for fishing, and very few full baskets have been taken. Fish are said to he Y?i7 >'» m t™us> but for some reason it is difficult to induce them to take tho ordinary lures. ' _ South Canterbury anglers are not enjoying very good sport this season, big fish being few and far between. . Usually at this time ol year tlio big fish are taking freely Importation of Live Fish.-Tho list Riven below should bo of some interest to anglers as it gives somo idea of tho large niimbei of coarse fish imported into tho country, principally from Germany (says tho "Field"') Winter,,of course, is the chief season for transmitting; live fish, and from about Septembov up to the end of 1908 tho following fish wcro bought and sold by olio firm of importers alono, Messrs.
