; ' C NEW FIELD TO BE OPENED. (nr TELEGIUI'H— SPECIAL COHUESrONDENT.) Dunedin, March i 2. At a meeting of tho Foreign Mission Comlnitteo of the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, held in Dunedin this week, consideration was given to a report on India, , drawn up by Dr. Portcous eighteen months ago. . Tho General Assembly unanimously , decided that a mission field should be opened ill India. Dr. Portcous, appointed first missionary, was sent to India for three and a half months to investigate. Eight districts were reported on, but it was. soon evident to tho committee that ono stood out prominently as tho most suitable field for the mission. Tho field chosen lies in the oast of tho Punjab, in tho North-West of India. It is made up of Patisla —a large native State —a numbor of smaller States, and part of Umballa. Tho district, in all, covers an, area of SOOO square miles, with a population of moro than two millions. During tho next fow months, and beforq going put to the Punjab, Dr. Portoous will bo doing deputation work throughout New Zealand.
