. *— — THE HEMP INDUSTRY. RAILWAY MATTERS. (BI TILEGItATH— SPEOIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Palmerston North, March 12. At the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night tho Wellington Chamber of Commerco wroto inviting delegates from the Palmerston Chamber to attend a conference in -■Wellington on April 13, and inviting members to prepare..and .read.'papers on. such questions as came within the.scope of chambers of commerce.-,.^Mγ.',.-Cohen--thought, it was highly desirable that the chamber should be represented, and ho suggested that Mr. A. Seifert should be~ asked to read a paper dealing with tho legislative enactments now in force in reference to the' hemp industry. Mr. Seifert, ho stated, was a man who, perhaps more than any other in New Zealand, had a thorough knowledge of the subject. His paper would be listened to with interest,' and if printed it would bo read throughout the Dominion, and bo the means of disseminating much valuable information. He moved that tho president and Mr. A. Seifert bo appointed delegates, and that Mr. A. Seifert bo asked to read a paper on tho subject indicated, also that the president be given power to add to tho number such members of the council of the chamber as aro willing to go. Tho motion was curried. A lettor was recoired from the Carterton Chambor of Commerce submitting a resolution passed at a meeting held on February 22 as follows:—" That the Hon. tho Minister for Railways be written to and asked to consider the claim of South Wairarapa (so long delayed) to communicate with tho Wost Coast of this island; that it bo pointed out to the Minister that all that is necessary is the linking up of tho system still in force; that the Minister be asked to accelerate the parly fast goods train which passes Carterton at 9.15 a.m., so as to connect with.tho New Plymouth express at Palmerston North; and that tho tra : n which leaves Palmerston North for Wairarapa after the arrival of tho Now Plymouth down train' should be timed so as to arrive at Masterton about 8.45 p.m. instead of as at present at 9.45 p.m. when the goods train to Foalherston ha* already passed along; further, that it be pointed out to the Minister that a promise was made to consider tho whole matter of train running between tho two coasts when tho Manawatii lino-was taken ovor by tho State, and especially if the haulaga of tho iieavy traffic was arranged so as to suporsedo the Rimutaba incline." On the motion of Mr. Cohen, it was-de-cided that tho council afford its entire support to tho Carterton proposition.
