Cabled advice received by the local agents state that the Shaw-Savill liner Arawa left Plymouth on Saturday afternoon for Wellington, via Cape Town and Hobart. The vessel is duo in Wellington about April 20. MOKE WRECKAGE SIGHTED. A Press Association message from Christchnrch reports that tho schooner Huia,,which arrived from Hokianga yesterday morning, when near Steven Island on Tuesday last passed what appeared to be a portion of a vessel's mast floating upright in tho water, also a log of timber. IN RUINS, The steamer Hawca (eaye tho Greymouth "Evening Star") is now nothing but a n>as3 of shattered ruins—a conditon brought about by the freiiuent use of dynamite. Further bhot9 will be fired. It is anticipated that with the first good freshet in the river a considerable, if not the whole, portion of tho wreck will disappear. ANOTHER WOOL' STEAMER. A surprise was sprung in shipping circles yesterday when Mr. G, H. Scales made public the fact that he had. chartered another Clan Line steamer to load at New Zealand ports in April for London. The present movements r of the Clan Ogilvy, the fourth of the samo line to load in Ko.v Zealand, are not disclosed. She is a vessel of 2641 tons gross register. EXPORTS FOR LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Whakatane, which, left Wellington on Wednesday night for London, had on board the following exports :—From Hluff; 3398 bales wool, 8 casks tallow. 15 casks pelts, 252 bales hemp. 392 bales tow, 300 sacks oats. From Waitara: 861 balea wool, 111 casks tallow, E7 casks pelts 6 bales leather, 6432 carcasses mutton, 3295 tiuarters beef, 516 crates mutton, 423 boxes frozen sundries, 14 casks oieo, 22 casks casings,.s casks oil, 150 sacks hides. 4 boxes meat extract, 94 cases canned meat. From Wanganui: 245 bales wool, 6009 carcasses lamb, 2155 carcasses mutton. Froif Wellington: 184 bales wool, 4175 crates cheese, 1000 quarters beef, 25.682 carcasses lamb. From Auckland: 150 bales wool, 2264 bags gum, 274 casks tallow, 57 casks nelts, 12 "v-les leather, 953 pieces timber, 912 sacks copra, \) packages sundries, 6 boxC3 bullion (value £12,650), 15,635 carcasses lamb, 475 carcasses mutton, 1193 quarters beef, 2 load bark. From Napier: 2425 carcasses lamb, 355 tegs and 5916 carcasses mutton. LIFTING THE SEASON'S WOOL.
AN INTEREgriNG RETURN. 'An intcrostinp; return of the wool shipments and shippers has been compiled locally. It gives an indication of how tho Dominion's staple product has boon sent to the Home market. The first shipment was that by the b.b. Italcain, which Bailed on November 22,1908. and the last lot dealt with is that of tho s.s. Otaki, which was digpatched for London from Auckland last Saturday. Altogether a toUl of 293,631 bdes has been exported. Of this law quantity the New Zealand Shipping Company has lifted the-lion's share, a matter of 133,048 bales having been placed under the hutches of vessels trading under tho flag of this line. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamers have carried 100,997 bales. The Tyser Company comes third on the list of carrion of wool, with a total of 35,663 bales to its credit. Tho newly-inaugurated lino of steamships ran under the auspices of Hr. O. H. Scales has also been well patronised, the trio of steamers so far di6psitehcd from these- shores havine taken 23,286 bales. The Fedcral-Tlonlder-Shire Line, which only trades to the West Coast of England portß, has transported 37 bales. . . It is expected that the TJnion Company's steamer Eakanoa will leave Wcstpqrt to-day for Wellington. . '■ ■ . . '■ ' ' The Mapourika left Westport at 4 a.m. yesterday for Greymoath. She is to make,a call.at Napier, for loading purposes before coming here, and ia accordingly duo at this port,about Tuesday next. On March 8, after a somewhat protracted passage of 65 days from. New York, tho .A,' and A. cargo steamer Jlashor.a arrived at;.. Melbourne. When she has discharged cargo there she. will proceed to Sydney, Auckland, ana , -Wellington. Tho vessel has 1050 tons"of general merchandise for this port, and is,duo here in the flret week of next month. ' .- . A practical engineer is .reported to have informed a Ohristchurch' "Press" representative that tho work of repairing tho TJliinaroa. would occupy about eight or ten weeks, and'" that tho cost of the job would bo from £6000 to £10,000, which would include over £2CCO for 'dock".dues, a windfall for Lyttelton.dock., It is stated' also that the plates to be renewed in the vessel's bottom will probably have to'be specially imported owing to their great size.
