POULTRY-KEEPING IN THE CITY.

' NEW BY-LAWS CONFIRMED. 'At last night's'meeting of tUe City Council the Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop) moved that tin proposed new by-laws to regulate the keeping of poultry in the city be confirmed. When the by-lnws came up for adoption ft a previous meeting a lengthy discussion , tools plnco with regard to ono of the provision*, 'i na effect of that clause was not more than , fifty head of poultry should bo allowed to lip kept in a poultry-house or nm in the city, without the consent and approval of the council. Ultimately it was decided to nmeiid tho clause by inserting the words "of lefs than quarter of an acre" after tho word "ran," Councillor Shirtcliffe now moved as an amendment that the additional words which had been inserted bo deleted. Ho sa{d, without fear of contradiction, that if a' fowl., run, even of more than quarter of an acre, contained 300 or -100 fowls, and was surrounded or three or four sides by premises, it constituted a grave menace to inhabitants in the locality. Yards of (hat kind undoubtedly depreciated the value of adjacent property. Ho strongly contended that Ike council should possess a power of veto on the matter. ■ ■> The Mayor, in explaining the position, 'paid Unit tho only motion which lie could now put was that the by-laws be. eonfivmol. H was extremely doubtful whether the amendment could be accepted under the ciroiinisl.inccs, Councillor Shirtcliffo remarked that if the motion to confirm the by-laws was lost they would have to begin agairr de novo. Tho Mayor said that that was tho case. Tt would be childish if the council passed resolutions one month and then in the succeeding month, without giving ike proposals a trial, turned round nnd negatived ■them. Upon being nut, the motion was adopted bj 9 votes to 7. Tlio division list wr.s as follows :- Ayosi The Mayor and. Councillors BnllLngci; Carniichaol, Conon, Hales, Luke, Moriah, Jilur* doch, and Smith. Against :Councillors Bisa, Fisher, Fletcher, Godber, Hindniarsh, Milium and Sliirtcliile.
