CITY COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Cily Council last night was attended by tlic Mayor (Hon. T. ~\\. Hislop) and all tho councillors. The. By-laws and Street Lighting Committee recommended:—That the application of Messrs. Meek and Von Haast for the consent of tho council to the authorisation of a roadway off Woolcombo Street bo granted, subject lo llio conditions laid down by the city engineer as to formation, and that application bo made for the exemption of Dement Street from tho provisions of Die Public 'Works Act, 1908. Councillor M'Laren moved, and Councillor Morrah seconded, that the first clause be referred back to the committee. Councillor Fisher thought that tho adoption of tho proposal would lead to congestion in tho extreme. The Mayor pointed out that it was proposed to erect eight buildings on the property, which comprised an acre. If a subdivision were agreed to, tho way ought to go right through to tho Town Bolt. Ho thought four, and not five, houses should be allowed on the back portion of the property. On the casting vote of tho Mayor, the matter waj referred back.to the committee. Tho report, as amended, was then adopted. The Finance and. Property. Committee recommended:—That Messrs. Magnus, Sanderson, and Co. bo informed that'it was regretted that their application for' compensation for damaged stock, caused by the flooding of their premises , , could not be acceded to; that the council's consent to Pcrcival Street Extension as a public street, tho council's consent to its beiiig a private street to be withdrawn, and that the seal of the corporation bo authorised to bo affixed to tho plan of subdivision formerly recommended by the By-laws Committee and approved b.y the council, on satisfactory arrangements being made for effecting necessary works; that an amount be placed on next year's estimates for the filling in of a gully at Adam's Terrace, oft" Aro Street, on satisfactory arrangements being made with the proprietors. The adoption of the report was agreed tj. The Libraries Committee recommended:— That , the tender of Jorgenson and Co. for tho supply of 53 scats for the Ncivtoirji Library Lecture Hall in the sum of 15s. a seat, amounting to JM3, be accepted;' that a stand be erected at the Newtown Library Lecture Hall for the lantern at an.estimated cost of £6, also that 100 yards of cork carpet be purchased for the above hall at a cost of .£ls; that the electrical engineer's recommendation with reference to the substitution of Osram lamps for carbon lamps at the Central Library, which will result in an annual saving of ,£9B . in ■ the lighting charges, be adopted^ Tho report was adopted. . The Power Stations and Tramways Committee recommended:—That the use nf school tickets be extended from 6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.; that a long box car, of lighter construction . than the cars at present in use. be constructed for the Brooklyn section. Tho committee reported that, acting oh the-'authority giver, them by the council, they had' accepted tho tender of Messrs. Turhbull, Hickson, and Gooder-for the supply of' tram ■ tickets for a period of three years. . . ■ The.report was adopted.-. ,
