BRITISH AFFORESTATION.
The afforestation of 9,000,000 ncrcs of land in Great Britain and Ireland is recommended by the Royal Commission 011 Coast Erosion. .The rotation period to be occupied by the process is eighty years. The scheme should be financed by a loan, the interest on which would bo defrayed out of taxation. After the fortieth year the forests would bo more than self-sup-porting, and after eighty years the net income would be 17} millions, while the State would bo in possession of property worth .£107,000,000 in excess of the total cost. Temporary emnloyment would be found for 18,000 men during the winter months, and permanent employment would be afforded to one man per 100 acres afforested, rising to 00,000 mon when the whole area had been dealt with..
