Only 60~of the delegates favoured secular education. THE EDUCATION PROBLEM. The attitude of tho Free Church Council on the education question bears out the statement made recently by the Anglican Bishop of Aucklaiiil (Ur. Aeligan) on his return from Enelawl, that in spito of strong differences of opinion as to the character and-method of religious education in the schools, tho great nialority of the people were opposed to the secular solution. Dr. Nolignn had'several consultations with the Archbishop of Canterbury on the subjeot/and-'rflso-flwd-an interview with Mr. Uunciman. Dr. Neligan.on the whole, favoured the proposals. of tho nrchbishop, who, speaking ion January,, 23,, stated: , That ! tho, failure of the attempted conciliation last year was regrettable j. that the compromise then proposed was the most practicable that could be J attained; that no-theorotioally perfect and fair I scheme is attainable; that, Churchmen of the future may have reason to look back regretfully to the failuro of a settlement; that the aim of.Churchmen was , to secure that children who attended elementary schools should bo brought up in the Christian faith.
