DEATH ON A BOWLING GREEN.

' (Br TEI.ECIIAPU—I'IIICSS ASSOCIATION.) Christchitfch, March 10. Tho death of Mr. F. J. Smith, oi Messrs. Coatcs and Co., well-known for many years in Christclmrch, occurred this afternoon very suddenly on the Christclmrch bowling green. Mr. Smith was sitting on one oi .the scats on the green when he was seized with unconsciousness, and died almost immediately. Ho had been in indifferent health for some time. Mr. Smith was ono of the very old members of tho Christchurch Bowling Club, and took very keen interest in the game. Ho las carried on the business of Messrs. Coatcs and Co. for many years past, and was greatly and widely respected in business circles. Iho deceased gentleman was also a very early member of the St. Augustine Masonic Lodge, in which ho held r. number of the principal offices at various times. He was also for a period District Grand Registrar under the English Constitution, and,also held .othei offices in the District Grand Lodge. Ho was a prominent member of the Federal Club, and also took an interest in many other institutions of a social character. The news of his death will be learned with very deep regret by 'a wide circlo of friends.
