DANNEVIRKE R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. GOLD LACE WINS THE COP. (UT TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL lIErORTEn.) Dannevirke, March 10. Tho weather was line but hot for the opening day of the Danncvirko Racing Club's autumn meeting, and there was a large attendance. A long spell of dry weather has left the tracks hard, lint, all things considered, the going was \ good, and tho times in all tho races were fast. Large fields were the order throughout , tho afternoon, and some good racing was witnessed. With tho exception of one event,; in which a couple of horses were badly left, the starting was firstclass. The race for tin) Cuj) was a very fine one, and resulted in a splendid finish, Mr. G. P. Donnelly's Gold Lace—a rank outsider—just getting up on the post, while the next four horses finished within throe lengths of her. Hatch, who rode the second horse, Sandstrcam, scarcely showed to advantage in the finish, but it would hardly be correct to say that Gold Lace had a lucky win, for she was badly placed in tho early part of the race, and sue registered good time for the i'lill journey. F. Cress, who rode Roosevelt to victory in the Paliiatua Cup, was tip on Gold Lace to-day. Speculation on the totallsator was fairly brisk, the sum of £7343 being handled during.tho day. In addition to this, about a down bookmakers were licensed, one of whom was unable to meet his liabilities after the sixth race. Following arc tho results: —

NOTES AND COMMENTS.
TBy Glencoe.l Hipporofla, Narcotic, and Whatakura wero almost evenly backed in the Hurdlo Race, and the two last-named fell, leaving Hipporofla to como in a very easy winner. Hipporofla has greatly improved in tho last couple of months, and appears equal to ] winning in any cohipany now. Cairns, ridor of Narcotic, injured his shoulder when his mount fell, in conscquenco of which he was unable to rido Nyland, who won tho Hack Welter later in the day. Pritchard, who rodo Whatakura, broke a stirrup leather at tho end of a mile, and his mount came to grief at the last fence, but tho jockey sustained no injury. Scenery, who was right behind in tho early stages, mado up a lot of ground over tho last four furlongs, and just beat Speciosa for second money. Speciosa ran in blinkers, but tbcro was no appreciable improvement in her conduct at tho barrier. Tho presence of Aberbrothock in tho Makirikiri Hack race frightened more than half tho acceptors out of that event. Mr. Buick's horse had tho services of Oliver, and was made tho hottest favourite of the day. Ho fully justified tho confidenco reposed in him, and won very easily at the finish. Kimmerian ran a good live furlongs, but wa3 tiring at tho finish, while liawera, who got away badly, finished very well. Taitoko, Waitapu, and Arc-light were withdrawn from tho Dannovirko Cup, leaving twelve starters for tho ovenfc. Chanteuse was mads a firm favourite, and WoodI hey, Ballyheigh, and Sandstream were next in demand. Backers of Sandstream were unlucky, for, beyond doubt, tho San Fran gelding should havo won, but Hatch rode an over-confident race, and Gold Laco got up in tho last stride, and won by I tho narrowest of margins. Sandstream was in a good position all tho way, arid looked all over a winner in the straight —so much so, that Hatch never moved on him, evidently imagining that Gold Laco was too late to catch him. Still Gold Lace's win was full of merit, for she was a long way behind the leaders, six furlongs from home, and, at tho turn into tho straight, she had to come on tho outside. In the spring of the present season Gold Laco did not run up to expectations in races over a mile, and it appeared as if she would bo better if confined to sprint events, but she finished with plenty of dash in the Dannovirko Cup. This is the third occasion on which this race has been won by a representative of the iniporLJ horso Gold Reef. Chantouso ran an honest race, but had rather an unlucky run. Woodhey, who will meet both Cantouso and Gold Laco on considerably better terms in the Napier Cup, was in a handy position in the straight, but she was tiring again in the last hundred yards. Ballyheigh was among the leaders for a mile, but, after that, ho dropped right back, and finished last. Ho is a leggy customer that would want a very easy passage to enable him to do his best. Moloch, Mcrrio -Rose, and Tangeroa wore all prominent at different stages, but nono of tho others call for mention.
The large field of fifteen saddled up for the Nursery Handicap, Ballyshannon, ridden by Oliver, and Boanerges, ridden by Hatch, dividing public favour. Boanerges began smartly, and never gave anything else a chance, being several lengths ahead of Day Beam at the finish, while the latter had everything but the winner well beaten. Boanerges had previously won a race at the Manawatu summer meeting, but ho afterwards ran disappointingly at the Wellington Cup mooting. Tho Nursery Handicap was not tho only win for Shearsby's stable, for, in the Tahorniti Welter Handicap, Nyland— a full brother to Vasa, ami a half-brother to Boanerges— easily accounted for tho opposition. Nyland is a fine big horse, and, as he is quito green as yet, bo should turn out very useful. It is worthy of note that his dam, Parera, who is also owned by Mr. llighdcn, has thrown four winners in succession, viz., Pas Soul, Vasa, Nyland, and Boanerges—quite a good record. Tho Cockatoo, who was engaged in both welter races, did not put in an appearance at tho meeting. _ Awha, who was tho actual favourite, in Nyland's race, did not shape pleasingly, and finished out of a place. Vi was generally considered a good thing for the Flying Sialics, bnt i North Head, from the Kara inu stable, ra mo in for a lot of support before tho close of the betting. Stylish made tho pace warm from tho start, but Lowo rode a splendid race on the favourite, and, without bustling her, Ti'o reached tho loaders in tho straight, and won comfortably ■at tho finish. Pluck, another of tho Morn'wees, finished second. North Head closed
up in the Inst furlong, but Stylish beat him for third place. Inez was the public selection in the Electric Hack Handicap, with Waipunui next in demand, hut neither of the pair returned a dividend. IJormia. w'ho won her first race at Dannevirko in December, returned to winning form yesterday. Sho headed the field in the last furlong, but had to lie ridden right out to stall olf a late run by Toango, who did not get through until too late. Hoieward carried overweight to secure tho services of Jenkins, hut he began badly, and, though he ran up fourth at one stage, ho was well beaten at the finish. Maiora was tho candidate entrusted with most support in the Tamaki Welter, and he proved himself a really good horse by tho convincing manner in which ho won at the finish. Trainer J. M'Langblin is having quito a run of luck lately with Reck Ferry and Maiora, both of whom always strip in great racing condition. The second favourite in Maiora's race was Uangihaeta, but tho chestnut horse was never prominent. Aboriginal was well hacked by his party, hut, though Oliver bad him first away, ho had no chance of extending Maiora, and had to bo content with second position. None of the members of W. Davies's Trentham team was brought tc the meeting. "" The position of private trainer to Mr. D. Uuick, M.P., has been filled by the appointment of Alf. Neale, who has been connected with A. Shearsby's stable for some four years. Neale is a quiet, energetic young man, and fortunate in obtaining a splendid team to manage. Mr. Buick is to be congratulated on obtaining his services. Mr. Doulan, tho well-known West Coast sportsman, owner of Ho and Freeland, has purchased North Pole (Birkenhead)—Norsemaid) from the Hon. J. 1). Orniond, and the gelding will be shipped to Greymouth from Wejlington on Saturday. Mr. J. Chadwick, acting on behalf of a Gisborno breeder, has completed the sale of two fillies, by Menschikoff—-Nannie, a two-year-old, and a three-year-old, to Mr. Wire Token.-i, of Hunterville. Nannie is tho dam of Lady Nannie, who raced successfully in India. Mr. Chadwick has also sold to Mr. St. J. Buckley a two-year-old full-sister to tho Wellington Cup winner, Blue Ribbon. This filly will bo trained in the South Island, whence it will bo shipped next week. Mr. Dugald Thompson, owner of Grenade, has purchased an untried gelding by Handsome Jack, which has gone into J. Hathaway's stablo to be prepared for hurdle events. Advices from Mastcrton state that Lctherin has been taken up again, but, with the tracks in their present condition, it is doubtful if the gelding will stand a preparation. . Tho Karamu jumpers, Nogi, Audax, and Kairoma, are reported all big and robust, and ready to go on with for tho winter jumping events. Possibly Audax and Kairoma will be given a run at Greenmeadows next week. Messrs. Whitworth Bros, made an offer for Effort after tho Duncdin meeting, with a view to taking tho Advance filly to Australia, but her owner declined to sell.
