The figures from the booth at Akatarawa Public School have not yet come to hand, but it is most unlikely tliat they will in any way affect the result. It is estimated that only about 1000 voters out of over 6000 on the roll exerciscd their voting powers. "Never sinco the institution of licensing committees and of the triennial election of members of these bodies has such an atmosphere of interest and keen expectancy respecting the result of tho poll that is to decide their personnel for another term been fanned into existence in Auckland as was the case to-day. Tho burning ques'tiou so far as the .city was concerned was whetlter the peoplo by carrying " Reduction" at the last local option poll meant thereby tho closing of the full 25 per cent, of existing hotels, tho maximum closure allowed under tho Act, or whether a less number (being not less than 5 per cent.) should, in their opinion, bo closed on June 30 next, when the present licenses expire. Two distinct "tickets" were.nominated, the five members of tho ono ticket run by the No-License party being pledged to tho full roduction, while tho five men on tho other "ticket,"' which is under tho aegis of the Citizens' League, and which is known as the' "moderate tickot," pledged themselves tosuch an administration of the licensing laws .is they consider warranted and equitable. In addition to theso two tickets there wero thrco independent candidates standing. The tickets wero: No-License: Messrs. P. E. Cheal, A. Rosser, M. Casey, G. Aickin, and W. J. Rees. Citizens' League: Messrs. L. J. Bagnallj J. J. Holland, J. M. Mennio, W. C. Somers, and Dr. King. v Independents: Mr. J. Jamieson, Mrs. Emily E. Nicol, and Mr. W. Richardson. The election of a Licensing Committee for Auckland resulted, after ono of tho keenest contests-on record, in the defeat of the candidates pledged to the maximum reduction of licenses, which would have entailed the closing of 14 hotels. Tho Citizens' League (moderate) ticket was returned, the voting being as follows:—h: J. Uagnall, 6567; J. J. Holland, 6495; J. M. Mennie, 6427; Dr. King, 6380; W. C. Somers, 6166. The voting for the other candidates was: M. Casey, 5424; P. Choal, 5373; G. Aicken, 5185; W. Rees, 5007; A. Rosser, 4400 (the foregoing representing the No-License ticket); and W. Richardson, 2501; J. Jamioson, 751; Mrs. Nicol, 458 (tho three last-named being independents).
