From the first she warmly espoused the cause of Dinizulu, and spent a large sum of money in liis defence. At tho time of Dinizulu's trial there were over 300 witnesses snbpoenaed on his behalf, and Miss Colenso, who, with other sympathisers, housed and fed them, lived during the trial in a house in the middle of their location. During the trial, Miss Colenso was only allowed to be present in the Court on condition that sho sat where none of the witnesses could see her, face. When martial law was pronounced in Natal, at the time when Colonel Sir Duncan Mackenzie set out to arrest Dinizulu, that officer refused to give Miss Colenso a permit to go to tho chief's kraal, and requested her to leavo by the next train. On May 27 the Natal magistrate in chargo of tho case against Dinizulu decided that Miss Colenso is unsuitable to act as interpreter for Dinizulu, "owing to the possibility that' her attempts to influence public opinion in Great Britain may re-act upon public opinion in Natal, and so prejudice the jury against the prisoner."]
