NOTES AND COMMENTS.
fßi Glencoe.l The March meeting of tho Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club will commence on Saturday. Acceptances for tho Warrengate Jockey Club's meeting are due on Monday next. Bookmakers are notified by advertisement in this issue that applications for licenses to bet at the pony races next Saturday may bo obtained up till 4 p.m. on Friday. An extra charge of £2 will be mado for licenses issued after that hour. . Tho only occasion on which the crack English colt,-Your Majesty, was beaten "ast season was in the Two Thousand Guineas, when it was generally considered that lio was hot ready. In the important Spring handicaps this year, however, several horses of his own age have been set to concede him a few pounds. Mr. W. G. Nightingale, , secretary of tho Waipukurau Racing Club and of the Wairoa Racing Club, intends in future to devote himself entirely to sporting work. On the occasion of his severing his connection with Mr. J. C. M'Vay's saddlery establishment in Napier last week, after 17 years' service, he was presented by the staff there with a handsome case of pipes, cigar holder, and cigaretto holder.
Mr. T. O'Neill's chestnut colt Eclogue, who has previously been trained in Wanganui, will go into Attwood's Feilding stablo this week. Tho Auckland trainer, D. Moraghan, recently received a cable offering tho owners of Master Soult IGOO guineas for their horse. This was 100 guineas in advance of a previous offer, but it was refused. Jos. Prosser motored home to Porirua from Wanganui 011 Sunday, and left on Monday with a team of three horses for the Dannovirke Cup meeting. Of the forty-nine horses entered for the Auckland Racing Club's Easter Handicap, 110 fewer than twenty-eight aro owned south of Auckland. Australian files to hand show that tho Newmarket Handicap was run in lmin. loi sec. "When the result was cabled to New Zealand the time was not mentioned. Soultlino's victory in the Nowmarket Handicap was his sixth win out of nine starts since he went to Australia. He started at an outside price in the Newmarket Handicap. but was first favourito in the All Aged Stakes won by l'arsee. In tho programme of tho Victorian Racing Club's ailtumn meeting just concluded a notable feature is tho prevalence of longdistance races. Throughout tho four days the only race over a shorter courso than six furlongs was tho Hopeful Stakes for two-year-olds. Tho majority of the races were either a mile or a longer distance than a mile. Mr. St. J. Buckley has purchased the two-year-old filly by Soult from Lady Hester for 500 guineas, and the youngster will go into the Porirua stablo to be trained. W. Mold has gone through to Auckland to bring tho filly down, and..Mr. Buckley, who arrived in Wellington from the Wanganui meeting 011 Sunday, will remain in the city for a day or two in order to have a look at his new purchase when it arrives. In the hurdle race on the first day of the Woodvillo, meeting Don Carlos, lOst. 131b., finished second, and Forest, lOst. 61b., finished out of'a place. After that meeting Forest was handicapped to meet Don Carlos on 31b. worse terms at Dannovirke, and now he has been handicapped to meet Don Carlos on lib. worse terms at Napier' Park. Since the, Woodville meeting Don Carlos ran third in tho open hurdle race at - Wanganui, so that Forest docs not appear to have any tho best of it.
Apa, who had to be destroyed at tho Wanganui races on Saturday, was a six-year-old bay gelding by Addington from Muriwai. He' had seasons on the racing track, and during that time won ten races, and stakes amounting to nearly £2000. His most important victories wero achieved this season in the Metropolitan Handicap and tho Fendalton Handicap at Riccarton, and the, Rangitikei Cup at Bulls. He was a notoriously unlucky horse in cup races, and two seasons ago ran second in the Wellington Cup, Manawatu Cup, Ashhurst Cup, and Rangitikei Cup, while other important races in which he acted as runner-up wore the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, won by Achilles, and the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton, won by Master Delaval. As All Red is but a four-year-old and a well-bred one, his latest victory at the \vanganui Jockey Club's meeting makes it appear as if ho was a cheap enough horse at 15U0 guineas It is understood that Mr. Buckley will not part with him now at any price. A Press Association telegram from Wanganui states that Waiariki's weight in the Esk Handicap at the Napier Parle meeting should be 6st. 131b., and in the RedclyfTo Handicap Bst., and not as published in yesterday's issue Bst. 91b. and 9st-. 101b. respectively. Waiariki is by San Fran, a (id was confused with Waoriki by Waiuku. Signor started first favourite in the Essendon Stakes, but his defeat in that race resulted in Pendil being installed a warm first favourite for tho Australian Cup. While Soultline and Seddon were winning at Caulfield'and Flemington, other New Zea-land-bred horses were holding their own at tho suburban meetings in New South Wales. At tho Lagoon Jockey Club's races on February 24, Highland Reel (Stepniak—Strathspey) won the' principal handicap, and at Rosehill, on February 25, Pretty Maid won the Jumpers' Flat, while two days later Wallasey won a pony race at Kensington. Quite a number of good winners in Australia and New Zealand this season are progeny of Goldsborough mares. Even Time, winner of tho V.R.C. St. Leger, is one of the number. ArtiUerie and Wharekura, who left for Sydney on Friday, are both booked to race at the Australian Jockey Club's meeting, but it is possible that they may be given a run at one of tho suburban meetings before that date. ArtiHerie has been entered for all the principal races at Randwick, and most likely A. Oliver will go across later on to ride her. Wharekura was recently purchased by 3lr. S. Whitworth, who raced Aeolus successfully at Randwick in the spring. Tho Eton gelding has been schooled over the jumps, and will be raced in hurdle races on the other side. In all probability ho will be ridden by H. Cairns. Mr. S. Whitworth leaves for Sydney on Friday next. ' The stallion Desmond (sire of The White Knight) at present stands in Ireland nt a fee of 200 guineas, but next season his fee is to be raised to 250 guineas, tho samo amount a.s Spearmint's. It :s stated, 011 , good authority, that Desmond's owner recently refused an offer of £40,000 for the horse, which offer was made 011 behalf of the German Government. As Desmond has only entered on his thirteenth year, it may pay his owner to keep him. A feature of the Dannovirke races on Wednesday and Thursday should lie tho Nursery Handicaps, for which the club has received very large entries. These events are introduced at Damievirkc for the first time, and there will probably bo over a dozen two-ycar-olda starting in tnem on both days.
