HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tho monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday, and was atceuaed by Messrs. M.' Welch (chairman), W. Galloway, T. Edwards, J. Whiteman, W. J. Lynch,and J. Wakeham. • The council passed a vote of sympathy with relatives of those who lost their lives in the wreck of the Penguin. The inspector of works reported that tho roads throughout the comity were breaking up through the continued' dry weather, otherwise they wero. in fair order. Tho Minister for' Railways wrote that 1 the Government could not accede to the request to reimburse the local bodies for the rates-which they had lost' through the purchase of the Wellington-Manawatu line.—Received. ■ Tho General Manager for Railways acknowledged receipt of JiaO to cover cost of providing a road-crossing at Exeter Street, Plimmerton, and stated that instructions had been given for the work to be put in hand.—Received. Report was made that two serious accidents had occurred recently at WaUacevilio Hill'on tho road leading- out to Muiigaroa" Valley. There was no fence at tho side' of the road, and a milk-cart and a timber wagon had gone over the-bank. The drop varied from 20ft. to 10ft. At the place where the'milk-cart plunged over the fall was sufficient to kill the horse and smash tho cart to pieces. A meeting of Wal-. laceville residents had been held on Friday night, and it had been decided to ask the council to provide, wiro for a fence, ar.d to make arrangements- for part of tho labour. This tho council agreed to do. April 7 was fixed as the date for the nest meeting. . \ Accounts amounting to <£9H 7s. Bd. were passed for payment, including J340 for A; l'almer in connection with the rifle rang© road contract. '
