THE TRAMWAY ROBBERY.
ACTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL. Although over £170 was , stolon from the safe of the temporary pay-in.depot of the Tramway Department,..'at..Sydney Streot, about the lniddlo of Dccomber'last, no cluo as to tho offender has been discovered. Tho" robbery was committed .between 4 p.m. one Sunday and 8.30 a.m. :. on tho following Monday. Tho doors and windows of tho building had not been , broken' in any way, and the lock of tho safe had riot been tarnpered with. Tho matter has been before tho Tramwaj Committee ever since, and at yesterday's meeting a definite step was taken, and as an interim outcome of tho inquiry made bj the committee, Sir. Clark, the City Council's auditor, has boon asked to co-opera to witl tlio accountant of the department in formulating a scheme- for tho carrying out of an inquiry into precisely what happens from tho tiiuo tlio money leaves tho conductor until it is paid into tho bank.
