TRENTHAM 1909.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. : PEOPLE'S DAY AT THE RANGE. SERVICE MATCHES. SNAP-SHOOTING iND. BAPID-FIEING. Cold, freezing cold nights, and clear torrid , days; that is Trentham weather at presont. Never baa the annual rifle championship carnival been so, favoured by the elements, ; and if the lino autumn weather continues Saturday next j will bring to a close the most successful gathering of riflemen in the history of 'New Zealand'rifle' i championship •: meetings. Saturday was ; "People's Day" at the range, and a fair nxun- ■ ber of interested' spectators assembled to witness the service matches—snap-shooting, rapidfiring, cover-sniping, and attack-firing. For the nonce, bull's-eye shooting was laid aside, and the marksmen an opportunity of .par-. ■ ticipating in a series of evonti into which' was introduced a slight flavouring essence of active' service. Disappearing figure targets bobbed up ' at intervals, drawing from the mounds rattling / , volleys of. musketry, the echoes of which echoed and reverberated among the hills. There. 1 is only another sound in the world that hits • the ear like it—the beating of the surf on a. i long shore beach. At least that is. what it most nearly resembles. All . the events were successfully completed by about five, o'clock in the i ■ late afternoon; two hours later the camp was practically, deserted; almost the entire'company went to town for a woll-earned relaxation.
