BOY DROWNED IN THE SURF.

Napier, March 7. A boy of eight years, named Maurico Edward Hughes, was drowned iu tho surf near tho southern end of Marino Parade ou Saturday aftenioon. M'Carthy, S.M., recorded a verdict of accidentally drowned, adding the following riders: —"That tho Coroner desires to oall the attention of tho proper authorities to the uselessnoss of tho buoys at present provided for life-saving pur. poses. In lieu of tho buoys there should bo provided life-saving bolts, with at least 200 yards of suitable ropo attached thereto. As a further rider tho Coroner desires to direct public attention to tho fact that a view of tho body disclosod tho fact that a man, his wife, and threo children lived in a cno-roomcd outbouso, not _ moro than 10 feet long by 3 feet wide, which was without ventilation of any kind. Tho body of deceased was laid oa a tablo alongsido a sleeping child."

Word was received yesterday afternoon in Carterton of a drowning accident that occurred at Rullitono's Admiral Sawmills, near Gladstone, whero an employee named Gcorgo Burnett was drowned while taking tho horser to bathe in a deep hole two and a half chains irony tho mill. - No particulars are to hand, and it is not known whether deceased fell or was thrown from his horse.
