FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.

(BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, March 4. In speaking on the subject of free school books, Mr. G. Edgecumbo remarked at the meetings of the Board of Education yesterday that the Education Department considered that the board had miscalculated its requirements. The chairman (Mr. C. J. Parr) said the Department should have the courtesy to reply to the board's lettor. The Department said the .grant was sufficient. The board would liko the Department to show that this was so. Tiie board should not be called upon to augment the grant out of its maintenance fund. It was agreed to press tho Department for a reply.
