CHILDREN'S AID SOCIETY.

DEPUTATION TO HON. D. BTJDDO,

A deputation of ladies, representing the Christchurch branch of the Society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children, says a Press Association message, waited on the Hon. D. Buddo yesterday afternoon. They requested tho Minister to authorise the Eegistrar of Births to issue to parents registering births copies of pamphlets drawn up by Dr. Truby King entitled "What is Best for Baby." It was desirable tha.t each mother should receive one of the pamphlets, on which would bo printed the names and addresses of the Plunket nurses and the name and address of the secretary of the society. The pamphlet contained information of value to mothers.

The second request was that a larger subsidy should be pc.id to the Christchurch Society. Tho deputatio.l were under the impression that tho Dunedin Society got £500 for the Karitane Home, and £500 more was divided among seven other societies.

- 11l reply, the Minister said that it had been proved that there was a necessity for the distribution of such literature as that submitted by the deputation-, but he could not give a. promise that the pamphlet would bo circulated in preference to those issued by the Health Department. There would be some expenditure involved, but ho would place the matter before his colleagues. In regard to tho application for an increased subsidy, he pointed out, that the amount oil the Estimates was £900 for Societies for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children, excluding the £500 for the ICaritane Home. He. could not say how many organisations had claims to shares of the £900, but the application would bo placed before the Cabinet for its consideration.

It was pointed out that ■no expenditure would be necessitated by the authorisation of the distribution- of the pamphlets. The society had 1000 copies, whicli would be handed over when authority was given. In regard to the work of the society tho deputation submitted statistics of tho work done by the two Plunket nurses employed locally, and the Minister expressed the opinion that tho results were perfectly satisfactory.
