TRENTHAM, 1909.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. OPENING DAY : 536 ENTRIES. SOME FINE MARKSMANSHIP. The opening day 0! tho eighth annual championship meeting of the Dominion Rifle Asso-, oiation at Trentham Range dawned bright and olear, with scarce a puff of wind, the atmospheric. conditions : boing almost perfect. The . wind, strengthened a,little, as tho .forenoon ■ wore on, but was more or ]es3 piilty in character. . The light,'steady and bright in the early morning, became changeable and . difficult "as tho breezo strengthened/and chased the'clouds across tho sun, sonding dark shadows across , the, targets. Shortly before 9 a.m. the competitors, who had previously, been squadded, fell in at their respective squadding'posts, nnd were addressed by Colonel R. J. Collins, V.D., Camp 'Com- (' mandanti He reviewed the decisions which had been arrived at'by the Executive Committee tho previous evening (published ■ 111 Tub Do--1 minion- yesterday), ■ and went on to eay that the number of entries totalled 536, a record for the Trentham championship meeting—for New Zealand, in fact. This was a striking testimony to the interest which was being taken ' in tho event by shooting men throughout the country.' ' .. ■ -• ■ ■ . ! The matter of' ricochets had lately excited j some controversy; tho Executive Committee, 1' said tho Colonel, had decided, that no ricochet 1 would be regarded as such which-did not strike j the bank, gravel, or sand. , i Re-entries in the "running-man"-competition, ; he continued, would not count in the competi- ! tion of the service aggregates; the first "shoot". ! only would be counted. In conclusion, he ! wished them every success in.their efforts, and j that in-tho competition for the championship: tlio best man would win. (Hear, hear). The I first day would the hardest, as a good deal I had to be accomplished. ; Tho men then.marched off to the 200 yards j mounds of the Collins and Sommerville ranges, and at-8.15 a.m. the first shot rang out and reverberated among the hills. The contest for j the Now Zealand Rillo Championship had ( begun. j SYNOPSIS OF RESULTS, i Volunteer Match.—Won by. 'Sergeant-Major j"A. The principal business of the day;.was. the firing for , the two extra events—the Volunteer 1 Match and the Riile : Club Match—which had been placed first on the programme as preliminary trials, the scores made not being included in the computation of any of the aggregate events. Theso'were fired conjointly, theranges being 200, 600, and 800 yards. In addition to these events two other extra matches* —one at 500 yards and tho other,at, 600 yards; —were commenced in . the , afternoon. bo that., those who had completed-their, firing, in'the. first two matches might be; Kept busy.'
