Speaking at Invorcargill ■ on Wednesday night, the Hon. J. A. Millar admitted that ho. had the natural ambition of ascending to tho topmost rung of tho political ladder, but ho would never aspire to it' while his present chief occupied it. As long as Sir Joseph Ward was in power, ho (Mr, Millar) would bo content with a subordinate position. His chief had occupied the position with credit to himself and tho Dominion, and they could not afford to loso him. .

Mr. Tankard, who will be director of the gymnasium in the flow Y.M.C.A. building which is now being ericted in Christchurcli, was particularly impressed with the fine buildings and equipment of the American gymnasiums. Tho Y.M.C.A. in Christchurcli, following tho example of tho Wellington Association, is ordering its new gymnastic equipment from America. t

Mr. J. W. Marchbanks, C.E., who was recently chief engineer for the Manawatu Railway Company, has been recommended to the Woilington Harbour Board, by . a committee of tho full board, out of applicants, for the ■ position of Harbour Hoard engineer It is-expected that the board will confirm tho recommendation at its next meeting. The appointment, which will bo of 12 months, with a prospective further engagement for five years, carries a salary of £1000 a year, and tho successful applicant will comnioncG his duties on May Ist. Mr. Marchbanks completed his engineering training in Dnnedin, and was for 19 years with tho Manawatu Railway Company, succeeding Mr. J. E. Fulton as chief engineer and loeomotive superintendent. When tho Government took over tho lino a few months ago. tho chairman of directors of tho company (Mr. J. Kirkcaldie) spoko in warm praise o( tho administrative and engineering abilities of Mr. Marchbanks, and expressed his logret that his services were not being secunod by tho State.
