SEAMEN'S UNION.

Tho Seamen's Union, at its last meeting, decided to take 50 shares in tho proposed new Labour paper, and 200 copios of each issue. Tho Hon. J. Rigg, M.L.C., was appointed to represent the union on the Board of Management. ' . The union voted £5 to tho Labour Representation Committee, endorsed tho proposal to make the committee a permanent body, and approved of the proposed rules and constitution. ■ . It was decided to cite a Napier firm for alleged breach of award in failing to pay a lamp-trimmer overtime for raising steam on a donkey boiler in port before S a.m. The case is expected to come before the magistrate on March 18. _ Tbo following cases of alleged breach of award brought by. the union are to be heard next Tuesday(l) Failing to pay a crewwages within the period named in tho award, (2) employing an ordinary seaman as lamptrimmer "and paying him only £4 10s. a month instead of £7 a month, (3) to pay' lamp-trimmers overtime for raising steam on a donkoy boiler in port before 8 a.m., (4) employing a day.man more than 8 hours a day on six working days, and not paying overtime for tho excess over eight hours, (5) failing to pay the fireman for keeping up steam on the main boiler whilst cargo was being handled on Sunday at certain bays and roadsteads..

The union in each case will ask for a penalty of £10.
