Charles Alexnndcr, chief steward of tho stcaiucr Pen. gum. whoso body was recovered from tha wreck a few days ago, took place nt Pctone yesterday. hearing tlio house of deceased's aunt, Sirs. it. Hayward, 2!) Nelson Street, the cortege proceeded to the Wesleyan Mqthodist Church, where a service was conducted by tho Revs. R. Wilson and C. Patchett. Tho Rev. Mr. Wilson referred brielly to tho recent tragedy, and to the courage and devotiou which had been displayed by tho oflicers, tho crew, and tiie Prominent among those who had acted so heroically was -Air. Charles Alexander, chief steward. Right up to.- tlio last moment Mr. Alexander had busied himself in attending to tho needs of tlio passengers, serving oht lifebelts, and doing the best ho could, under those tragic circumstances, to benefit those who were with him in misfortune. The memory of the deceased officer would ever bo cherished, not only by. tlio survivors, but- by a large circle of relatives and friends. Tho final' test, saitl Mr. Wilson, was not based on church-going or doctrine, but depended on conduct, character, and devotiou to tho causo of righteousness and truth. Tho brotherly love which Jlr. Alexander had shown on that memorablo occasion was worthy of • all commendation and praise. Conveyances from Wellington brought out a largo number of friends, most of whom were stewards 011 the vessels in port, tho Maori, tho Takapuna, and tho To Allan. There wore also present some, of the survivors of tho Penguin. Tho funeral, which was an unusually largo one, proceeded to tlio 'l'aita cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Wilson conducted .tlio service at tho graveside. Tho latest body recovered at the sceno of tlio wreck is supposed to bo that of a saloon waiter named G. -Oiaydon. The, body was rccovoral near the mouth of tlio Karori stream, ami was brought in to town on Saturday.
