OBITUARY.
A FAMOUS FRENCH ARTIST. f TKLEUUAI'U rucss ASSOCIATION—COPTKIGIIT.) ' (Rec. February 28, 4.40 p.m.) Paris, February 27. The death is announced of Caran d'Ache, tho famous French artist. Mr. E. Poire, known far beyond France as "Caran d'Ache," was born in Moscow in 1859. Hii work has amused and delighted Paris for' many years, and there are few people, even in New Zealand, who have not seen some of his exquisitely absurd sketches of men pnd animals. His chief work has been in comic "stories without words," in which he gets his effect by grotesque but brilliantly sharp and subtle outline, 'lately he devised a new kind of toy —caricatures cut in outline from thin flat boards—which had an English vogue.
