CANDIDATES' EXPENSES. THE UNEMPLOYMENT FUND. ' STATEMENT BY MR. ASQUITH. (BT TBI.KGESI'H—FItESS ASSOCIATION—IWr'ttIOHT.) London, February 26. Tho Prime Minister, tho Right Hon. H. H. Asquith, told a deputation from tho Trades Union Congress that ho favours tho payment of Parliamentary candidates' expenses, but was undecided as to whether tho money should como from local or imperial funds. Tho unanimity among tho working men's representatives which existed a few years r.go regarding, tho payment of , members of the Houso of Commons was not now so 'apparent. Mr. Asquith said tho Government was eonsiftoring tho matter of' tho unemployment fund. There was a difficulty with regard to'making grants to trade unions lest tho contributions should bo used for militant purposes. Mr. Asquith refused to grant a minimum wage of 3Ss. a week to Government clerks.
