Tho death is announced of Dr. John Hay, C,M.G;., a trustee in tho Berry Estates, and formerly of New Zealand, Ho was 69 years of age. - Dr. John Hay, LL.D., C.M.G.,' was born in J. ew South Wales >in 1840, being tho son of Mr. David Hay, of Wauganui, New Zealand. He went t6 Auokland in 18C0 and ongagod in commercial pursuits, visiting Sydney and Europe frequently. His cousin, the late David Berry, appointed him and the Hon. Dr. James Aorton (since deceased; trustee sof tho vast Berry•estates, which were proved for more than a million. By taking a deep interest in tho dairying and agricultural development, tho importation of nuro breeds of cattle, tho orcotion of central factories, And tho extension of drainage and reticulation throughout tho ostatos, Dr, Hay was the means of greatly increasing tho resources of tho Shoalhnven district. He was known as, a liboral and progressive-landlord, nml gave lands for church sites, and also for railways through the estates; Ho was a councillor of St. Andrew's Collego in the, University of bydney and Cromwell Academy. H« married, m 1871, Jessie, daughter of John Sinclair, of WoSgow, and nieco of Dr. Andrew Sinolair, K.in! , sonetimo Colonial Secretary of New Zealand under Governors Fitaoy and Sir George
