It/is; stated thit a country .visitor, Mr.' J. "Wakolin, a sawmill owner at; Taiaroa', near Taihape. .was;-gqmg along Jervois Quay in, a car on his- way to the wharf, when he attempted'to' get off; the' car 'before' it stepped, the result being that he fell heavily on his. head, and .fractured, the base. ofhis skull..'Tho injured man was removed to Mr. Mee's chemises shop in an : unconscious con J ; dition, and -whilst there was 1 identified.': by-' a f friend.,; When- tho : serious nature of .the accident was ascertained, lie ivas taken to the hospital, where it was found necessary to perform an operation immediately. In spite of-all that medical-skill could do,' howover,' his died at'. 2 o'clock this morning. Mr./ Wake' lin was . very well known 'in the vicinity of. Taihapej and-was formerly a resident of the ; South Island. He waß a married man, about 34 yoars' of age, and his wifo is;at present spending, a holiday with her people in Lyttelton. ■< It is. stated that' Mr. .> Watcet lin was on his way; to Lyttelton to join his wife, arid he was apparently going down to the wharf when the accident happened.
