Sanders, manager of the Hutt Valleys Hardware, Co.; stated that the -articles mentioned in the three informations'; were similar' to articles; stocked by the company. Some o! the goods were stored, in the'lront shop, and others; in .the hulk .store. - The door .of'the latter place had" been broken'by-: a' cart, aridhad; been . repaired by a 7 piece of hoard, and, secured by a chaih and padlock.' On Saturday, February-13, witness .'left the shop, at. 9 p.m.; the door then being securely fastened.- O.n the Monday morning it was found that the door had ; been tampered with. . Witness reported the matter to Detective; Cassells. The key; (produced) given to- witness by the- detective had been tried oii the front door, and it .was found it .-would open the. door. Accused, lived about 30' or 40 yards from the shop." Detective Cassells stated that he saw; accuscd on the morning of February 15.-anil took liini to the detective oEce; where he made two statements which, witness took, down in writing; and which accused signed.
