ANOTHER NEW TYPE STEAMER. Wo have received advices (6ays the Sydney "Commercial News"). stating that Messrs. Osbourne, Graham, and Company have just come ■ pleted negotiations to build at their Hyiton '.Shipyard a- patent typo of steamer for some, rwell-known 'Newcastle owners. The vessel has vbeeri designed and patented by the Monitor Ship-. Iping Corporation, Limited, o£sSt. Nicholas Buildings, Newcaßtle-upon-Tyne,. and will',- be constructed under the superintendence of < Mr. A; H. Haver, .who''will be remembered as>.taking 'a prominent part in the designing of turret'ships. The. main features of the patent consist of an increased longitudinal strength, absolutely clear holds, and;' owing to the formation of the' hull, an increased, speed, over and above the ordinary: type of steamer, at not extra cost to the owner. The new steamer is to be delivered, in July next, and no doubt its progress will be watched with much interest by those concerned in shipping, and Sunderland people will trust for a considerable amount of work, both new and old, coming to the ; Wear, for the patent can be applied to old vessels, and might convert a boat which today is losing money into a dividend-paying machine. . INQUIRY INTO. THE LOSS OF THE CLAN : RANALD. : • ' The Adelaide Marine Board's inquiry into -the loss of the B.s. Clan Ranald, which, foundered in-St. Vincent's Gulf On January 31, while out* ward bound with a cargo of, wheat, terminated recently, after some additional evidence .had been taken, says, an Australian exchange. The president. then stated, that- the .finding of-the board was that the'fullest -investigation made had failed to elicit any /evidence which clearly accounted- for the sudden careening of the Clan Ranald on Sunday, January 31. The theory had been advanced by experts that no shifting of the yk cargo caused the wreck, and, again,. that the entrance of water into the vessel, unknown to the'officers, could alone account for her heeling over. It had been thought, on the other hand, by some members of the board, aud this | view, was supported by the first and third officers and the second engineer, that- although coal had beeii safely carried on the bridge and main decks 'on-previous voyages, when she leftPort Adelaide on her final voyage the weight of coal on her deck coupled with her six decreesof starboard , list,, was .apparently sufficient to endanger her-. stability. The' board was satis-fied-'that the Clan . Ranald was well found in every respect, and' the cargo properly stowed. The board had to record with regret that the master had to leave the- performance of his duty as master, through indisposition, to .the chiof officer. The. board could not find : any' vrilid grouud for suggesting charges against auy of the surviving officers, and as regarded the deceased officers, who wore >on watch, 'there existed no evidence to show that they neglected .their duty.. The board accepted as satisfactory - a sworn statement, from..the master . of . the • steamer •Uganda in explanation of his not having gone to the assistance of the Clan 'Ranald when passing up thb Gulf. In all probability -had the officers of the Clan Ranald at once after the disaster fired distress sound signals .assistance would havo beon forthcoming, As reflecting upon the discipline of tho ship it was elicited during, the inquiry that two fires had occurred in the port. cpaV bunkbrjduring. tho ship's stay in port, and not* been ..reported to. tho authorities. The-boai*d. was'of 1 opinion that an error of judg- : ment was committed, in anchoring the ship'after ,sho heeled over at 2 o'clock, and that the surviving officers and men behaved well after, the accident.
Tho bonrd expressed sympathy with relatives of the lost officers and members of the crew.
TAINUI, LEFT 810. '/ Gabled ladvicc received by the local agents of the Bhaw, Savill, and Albion new liner Tainui reports that the vessel on the Homeward voyage left Bio de Janeiro last Bun» day: (February 20). . • . Last night the Union. Company's steamer Kaitangata was expected to leave Woßtport for "Wellington. . . . Captain • Collins is at present in command of the Pateena, vice Captain :Stewart, who is at* tending-the Penguin inquiry. >• •Cabled advice received-reports that-the Maori* land, Company's steamer Ennerdale arrived in Adelaide last Saturday from' Melbourne. How long will , Jackson's Head light continue to fail mariners in time of. need? On her last l trip from "Wellington to Greymouth the Blackball' Coal Company's vessel Ngahere had a trying time in. Cook Strait; It is stated that Captain Ohristian.spent some to ascertain .his i position by picking up the light, and ultimately '.found .that it had. gone - out. v Captain*-: Johii'- Neale,. harbourmaster and. inspector'of fisheries at the Manukau, who'is to retire > on- superannuation Tat the .end. of next month; arrived in-New ( Zealand waters as chief officer of.' the, ship Lastingham.: at the end of August,'. 1884, says aii: exchange. The'.vessel was wrecked'at' Jacks'oii. Head before she could reach Wellington, , ! and .Captain. Neale and the: other tsurvivora arrived here'.by the ketch-Agnes ■on September.-; 6. .-Fifteen days'later he was appointed an officer of the Hinemoa, and he. was placed in command of her when the late Captain Fairchild went.' Home to '* bring, out '■ the Tutanekai.' r ,On March 1, 1898, . he became 1 , harbourmaster at Manukau.. Another officer of the Marine Department who will \ also . retire on March 31 is Captain Martin, harbourmaster, at Hokianga, who has occupied the position-since 1885. He was previously in the Bervice of the Auckland Provinoial Council.
In the House of •Commons, recently, Mr. M'Kenna said: "It was undesirable to publish the reserve price at which the Gladiator waß to be' spld. It was impossible:to .say -what tho total cost of salving, the ship would '-bo up' to the probable date of sale. She. would probably occupy dock until middle of December, and then be berthed elsewhere until sold." Scraniron reserve prices are seldom considered as desirable matter for publication, says a Home paper. ■ A Glasgow flrm- : of shipowners has placed an order for. a steamer, .with Dutch shipbuilders, whose price is said to be' £2000 below-the offer received from Olyde builders. Norwegian shipbuilders are also reported to be nuoting prices for vessels which Clyde firms could not possibly look at. The explanation offered is the much lower wages of the workmen in Holland and Norway.
