The important part that is being played by .the opening of the Main Trunk Railway in 1 bringing the various 'parts of the island into close touch with each other is strikingly demonstrated by a trip made by a, lady from Wairakei to Auckland. At the beginning of ' this week the lady loft Wairakei at 6.30 on Monday morning and drove to Taupo (a distance of six miies. Then she took the steamer across Lake Taupo to Tokaanu miles), and then continued -her journey by coach to Waiouru, a further distance of 44 miles. She arrived at Waiouru at six o'clock, had dinner, and then caught the first northbound Main Trunk express, reaching Auckland at seven o'clock on-Tuesday morning. In" tho 24J hours she thus ■' travelled 320 miles,- including 50 miles by concb, 28 by steamer, and 242 by rail. It is not so long ago that such :i journey would have occupied about' four days, The lady's' actual destination was Drury, but, as tho express does not stop at that station she came on to Auckland and took the train back to Drury the sam'ejmorning,
