fßi Glekcoe.l PONY AND GALLOWAY RACING CLUB. MIRAMAR CUP WON BY FIREFLY. . A DISQUALIFICATION. Thore was' excellent weather on Saturday afternoon, and a largo crowd journoyed to Miramar for tho opening day of the Wellington Pony and Gallon-ay Racing Club's February meeting, the attendance being as largo as on any previous occasion at Miramar. The racing track was. in good order, but the fields throughout were small, three of the races.producing only three starters,.and the racing was in consequence . not so interesting as usual. The principal event, the Mira-. mar Cup, was won by Firefly, while Merrio Oliver, who was making his first appearancq, accounted for a, double. At the conclusion of the Miramar Cup, J. M'Laughlin, owner of Mirotta, and H. Abbott, tho jockey, were disqualified during the-pleasure of tho club, as the running of Miretta was not considered satisfactory. In the first race there appeared to be wanting among the competitors .that keen spirit of rivalry which is the important factor in lending public interest to an equine, struggle, arid the djsqualificatiori of two of the candidates (familiar Miramar porformers) would not have met with public disapproval. It is possible, however, that'the management was in possession of facts which justified its: not taking drastic moasures. About fourteen bookmakers were present, and did large business, but as five actual favourites prevailed the public had something the best of the deal. Two members of tlio "Red Mill" Company moved in' and out among the crowd tho whole afternoon soliciting subscriptions for,the Penguin relief fund, and their' efforts were doubtlesswell rewarded. Thd meeting will ho concluded next ■ Saturday; when the' programme, is framed on slightly different lines,, and as tho; entries are much krgerthan usual -the .racing should show a considerable improvement, on the first "day. Details of the; racing are as follow:— . . '.' . MURITAI HANDICAP, of 20 sovs. ' For. ponies 14.2 and under. Four furlongs.—Mr. L. Moir's b. in.
