FIRE AT NORTHLAND.
A FINE RESIDENCE DESTROTSED. i, A big rofleotion on the skyline at the back of. the. hills on the western.side of the city, at Qi3o last night, indicated that a fire was in. progress qn the high , and inquiries elicited the fact th jit the. outbreak was at Kaupapa ltoad, at the; residoiico of Mr: A. 0. Penrco, ex-Maybr. of Kaforij: tlie owner of one of tho finest residences in the district. 1 The hotiso, which was on one floor, contained 8 roomsj and was completely demolished, tho oontbnts also ■ being destroyed, Tho fire brigade arrived during the conflagration, but, owing tile lftck of water* could do littlo or nothing to stop the fire, There was .a risk of the flijmos spreading to three other houses close by, and tho furniture was removed irom them, put the brigade suoc'opded in confining thp fire to Mr,. Poarop'S; house: • The outbreak is supposed to have been caused by airing linen in front of the fire. Tho building was insured .with : the Atlas Insurance Company, but the amount was not available last night. The contents were insured for £500 with the Commercial Union.
