THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN. COMPLETION OF THE TEAM. CLEM HILL DISSATISFIED. (by XELEOBirn—rnEss. association—coriEiairr.) Melbourne, February ie. The/selectors (Messrs; Iredalo, Macalister, and Hill) have choson \Yhitty, Macalister, Carkeok, Sid. Gregory, and Bardsley to complete, tho. Australian Eleven. • / Hopkins has been recommended for fifteenth man. - ' • ' ■ Clem Hill strongly objected to the choice .of Macalister and Carkeok, and urged Gehrs's claims. He told his co-solectors that he did not think the best men had been chosen, and that he intended to wash his hands of the whole affair.
•■ Following is a complete list; of the players selected to go Home:— Noble, Trumper, Carter,. Macartney, Bardsley, Cotter,; Syd. Gregory, Hopkins (emergency), N-S-W.; Armstrong, Hansford, M'Alister, Carkeek . (Victoria); whitty and O'Connor (South Australia); and Hartigan (Queensland). ,: Eeferring to the capabilities of players likely to ba selected, the Sydney "Referee," in its latest issue, states There are nine official certainties for-the Australian Eleven, viz.,: M. A. Y. Trumper, V. Eansford, A., Cotter, H.' Carter, : E. Hartigan, W. W-. Arm-strong,-C-. G. Mncartnoy, and J. A. O'Connor. It is unofficiallv expected that tho team will be completed by w. Bardsley, S. E. Gregory, P. M'Alister, G. Hazlitt, and YY. Carkeek. If this be the team, it .will be a trifle deficient in' high-class bowling, powerful with the bat,-and fair to good in fielding. On the actual form of the, season C. It. Gorry, should .be first and W. Carkeek second wioket-keeper; but it would not be wise to ignore last season's form of H.. Carter, when his; batting was.of high quality and his. wicket-keeping very good. One would like to see two.left-hand bowlers taken to England,' but that one supposes is practically out of;the question now. . ' ■ ■ The team will leave in P..ir.S. Orontes on ,Maroh 18. The Board of Control will call a of tho players when the team is comploted for the purpose ol appointing a manager to be approved of by, the board. Last week some ot the selected players at a meeting in , Sydney appointed . Mr. Frank Laver and as ohairman ■ Mr. M. A. Noble notified Mr, W..,P.,M®lhone of the matter. But. the appointment is not recognisM; it will have to. be made at a-properly convened meeting of the team. _ However, that is a niere. matter of torm, as, Mr. Laver- is 'sure- to. have' the supportof ,a majority of the members, even if there was another Richmond in the field. It is understood, that the . Board of. Control will appoint the captain, vice-cap'tain, and tion committee. It is the'duty .of the board P/ do, so; and, it is to be 1 hoped that it l -will establish th& correct precedent on this occasion.
