THE NORSE FLAG OVER CHINAMEN
, A STRANGELY-JIANNED STEAMER. (BY. TELEGRAPH SPECIAL • CORRESPONDENT.) ' Dunedln, February 11. / The arrival, this morning at Port Chalmers of. the Norwegian steamer Sildra supplied evidence - that British.: shipowners aro not the sole European employers "of coloured, sailors arid firemen/ /Thq.Sildra carries chiefly Chinese,"both in the stokehold and on deck. Asked concerning, this curious substitution of Chinese for the descendants of tho Vikings, the chief officer said that.some of the,' Chinese had been on; the vessel .for' two and a half years., Ho seemed reluctant,,to:pursue the subject further, probably from a disinclination to discuss -his owner's affairs, -:but his personal opinion,''despite ;his'reserve,/was nevertheless evi-. dent in the few words with which he dismissed the .subject:.".The best/of. them' (the/Chinese);, cannot come up to our own men;' they are impudent, too, at .times."'.:, As' an afterthought, an;] perhaps to /justify the Celestials' presence under the Norsemen's flag, ho auded: "When a boat: is in' Australia the white-crews/go .ashore- and neglect, their work."
