THE ELECTIONS FOR APRIL. PROBABLE CANDIDATES. Wednesday, April 28, is approaching, and on that day citizens will do;some more voting.. It ivill not be on loan proposals. The people will be called upon to decide on that day the merits of candidates ; for the.mayoralty and for seats on the City Council; For the Mayoralty. Already a good deal of speculation has taken place as to who will contest the mayoral honours, and a Dominion reporter made .inquiries yesterday, from which it would appear that several candidates will come forward. , ' The Hon. T. TV.' Hislop declined to state his intention. "I can make no announcement to anybody as yet," ho said. ' "I promised my supporters that they would be the first to, know my decision." Mr. Hislop mentioned that he understood a requisition was 1 being signed and would be presented to him in a few days. ' ■ When approached on the subject, Mr. W. H. P. Barber, ex-M.P., roplied that he had not definitely decided to contest the mayoralty, but there was a probability that he would consent to do so. Mr. Barbfer added that already twb or threo hundred people 1 had urged him to come forward. Mr. F. M. B. Fisher,-M.P., has been suggested as a likely candidate. However, Mr. lusher, ;when asked regarding the rumour, was unable to reply definitely one way or the othor. He had not thought of the matter j he said, but it was unlikely , that he would seek re-election as councillor.' The name of Mr. J./P, Luke, M.P., has been mentioned, but that gentleman told out reporter, that there was nothing he could say about.it at. this early stage. He had not given the matter a thought. . ' . Another name spoken of was that of Mr. J- R- Blair, who, it will be remembered, held office as Mayor ,in 1898 and-1899. Mr. Blair states that the matter has not suggested itself to him. The election of April 29 last year was between the Horn. T. W. Hislop and Mr. J. G. V\. Aitken, and the poll resulted, as follows:— Hislop ... ... ... ... 9192 Aitkeir ... ... ... ;.... 5549 . Ssats In the Council. The following members of the present council, replying to inquiries, made, stated that they intended to,come,forward again:— Councillor T. Ballineer, ' 'Councillor T. Shirtcliffo.^ On the other, hand, the following, five informed our reporter that they'would not contest;the coming election:—; Councillor A. S. Biss, 1 Councillor J. Godber, Councillor A. H. Hindmarsh,. Councillor W; H. Morrah, . Councillor M. Murdoch,, The remaining four—Councillors' F. M. B. Fisher, W. H. Hales, J. P. Lufeo, and ,T. i Smith—have not yet come to a decision as to contesting the council seats. Thirty-six candidates presonted themselvc-s at the last council election on April 24, 1907; and .some of those who were defeated may . be expected to make a further attempt.
