ATHLETICS.

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. TIiCcHAIjiPIONSHIP. MEETING. . .Dr.lNowmaiir (chairman), Messrs. A. Mar-riott,-M'-H. Pollock, A, Davies, W. F. Larkiri, and W., Goffoy■ were present! at:a''meeting of the council of theNew.vZealand Amateur Athletic' Association ■,' held last - evening. The- first business was' the consideration' of »■ letter.received frbm-Mr.'W, G; Atack, president of the New Zealand Amateur-Athietio Association, which read as follows:—"Ameeting of the Canterbury Centre was held .last night for the purpose of making preliminary arrangements in connection with the carrying out ,of. the New Zealand championship meeting in Christchurch. I pointed put the possible complications should two meetings be held,, and 1 suggested that'tho Wellington Contra should he approached with the following proposal—That the championship meeting be carried out at Dunedin by tho Otago Centre, and that any profit arising : therefrom, other than that due to the centre, should,be' held in trust by a party inde-. pendent of either the council or your executive for. the purpose of assisting in financ- : ing a New Zealand team in.Brisbane in No-, yember. I made these suggestions purely in what I regarded to bo the best interests of the sport, and though I am well aware that I risk being, charged with , down,' that knowledge cannot deter me from my obvious duty'to the sport and to the competitors. My suggestions were approved by the meeting, and if adopted by your executive, neither party will lose its dignity, nor will the matter of the standing of. either be affected. ■ My proposition was put forward solely in order ; that no penalty jbe incurred by the competitors.' Should two meetings be held, one of them necessarily will re-: ceive no recognition in the future, and the men ■ who , competed at that meeting should bo penalised. If two. , ' meetings are held, there is no, certainty at present which one willbo recognised, and therefore, as I see .the position,- the council and the executive should sink all personal, views.so far as the championships , are. concerned, and. agree to • the holding of only ■ one meeting, and to ,use : their-, best "■ respective efforts to- make that meeting', a.-success..
