At Penrith, Obarles George Sinclair, gentleman farmer, Grahamslow, Roxburghshire, was charged with having driven a motor car at Penrith to the danger of the fmblic. Mr. G. A. Lightfoot, solicitor. Carisle, appeared for tho defendant, and pleaded , guilty. Tho evidence of several witnesses showed that when passing Milestone House tho wrong road was taken, and the car went pt a terrific speed down a steep lull, being ont of control, and at tho bottom ran into a cart laden with a ton of coals. Cart, horse, and man wore thrown into the dyke, and the- car was wrecked. No horn was Bounded. Tho pxplanation gtrcn by Mr. Lightfoot was that tho defendant bad only bought tho car on tho day of the accident. It was'a rery fast and high-powersd car, but when running alongside a Scottish es; press on the' London and North-Wcatera main line ho did not think he was exceeding the limit. W'hen going down tho steep hul defendant accidentally nut his foot on the acceleration pedal instead of on the hrako, the ; arrangement being different from what he had been accustomed to. The Bench fined defendant £10 and coats, and ordered tho license to be endorsed.
