DROWNED IN THE MANAWATU.
INQUEST ON A SAD CASE. Tho evidence of Mrs. Hansen, mother of Elsio Hansen, drowned in tho Manauatu River at Palmerston on Friday, wob to tho effect that deceased left homo at 1.30 p.m. to attend a school picnic, and sho did not see he: alive- again. Instead,of going to tho picnic sho went to tho river with a couplo of companions. One, of them, named Florno Thompson, walked out on a log jutting over the river, doceased following her. Whilst on tho log Florrio Thompson ovei balanced, and, catching hold of deceased, thoy both fell into tho river. Florrie Thompson was carried inshore by the current and landed, but deceased was carried away. Tho only witness of the occurrence was a boy 10 years old. A verdict of "accidental death" was returned. DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. The lad Patrick M'Crossin, of Upper Hutt, who sustained a compound fracture of the leg throueh falling under tho wheels of a trap, on Thursday last, and was brought to the Wolliiißton Hospita' for treatment, died at 'the institution yesterday morning, from shock and loss of blood. Tho deceased's parents reside at Upper-Hutt. An inquost will ibe held at the hospital at noon to-day. SUDDEN DEATH. (by telegraph—rrass association.) Dunedln, February 7. A farmer named Charles Adam Mason, aged 63 years, rcsiduig at Puerna, died suddenly yesterday, falling dead while engaged in milking a cow. His wife was standing talking to him at tho time. Deceased had not been' attended by a doctor for years, but lately suffered from shortness of breath. Heart disease is supposed to bo tho causo of death. , DIED IN THE STREET. ' Chrlstchuroh, February 6. ~ At the inquost on Henry Skinner, tho ]iiry returned a verdict of death from hoait failure. Deceased, who was a bootmaker by trade, was picked up m a dying condition on Bealey Avenue, and expired shortly afterwards. BURSTING OF A LAMP. .
