Rutherford, ex-M.P., former constituents at Hanmer,'on Tuesday. The .Minister will not return before to-morrow > * week, as ho bo entertained by his own constituents at'a social at Kaiapoi on' Friday , in celebration of bis elevation to Ministerial rank. , '
Our llasterton correspondent advises that , Constable Doylej one of the most popular polico officers that has yet been stationed at Mastertcn, who leaves for Wellington today, was entertained at a farewell fathering by a large number of friends on bursday evening. Mr. Eli Smith, J.P., occupied the chair, and proposed the toast of the guest of the evening. The chairman also presented Constable Doyle-(on behalf of comiades) with a pair of Tazors. On Thursday night, at the Linton Public Hall,, a farewell social was tendered-to Mr. Evans, schoolmaster, who is leaving Linton, after a residence of 16' years. The function (says our Palmerston North correspondent) was vory successful, the hall being crowded with residents from all parts of the district During the evening Mr. Moody, chairman of the bchool Committee, on , behalf of tho residents, presented Mr. Evans mth a puiso of sovereigns. ' .A cable seceived in Wellington yesterday announced the death of Mr. Jonah Jonas a 'wealthy and highly-rospected member of the' London Hebrew community, and father of Mrs. David Nathan, of this city. The deceased gentleman, who met his death by a fall from, a. railway carriage as it was carrying him to Nottingham, his birthplace was one of the diamond merchants of Hat-1 ton Garden. Ho resided in Bedford Square, • London. 'A. Duncdin Press 'Association telegram states, that at the meeting of the Education Board, Inspector Fitzgerald, who has been in the servioe of the board as teacher and inspector sinco its inception, and who, prior to that, was in ihe sorvico>of tho Provincial Executive, tendered his resignation.' Complimentary reference was made to Mr. Fitzgerald's servicesj and the board decided to accept his resignation and grant him six months' leave of absence from date on full pay. , The Very Rev. Dean , Carow was entertained on Thursday ovohing in' the Town Hall' (says, a, Greymouth Press Association telegram), when ho was presonted with a beautifully-illuminated address and a puree containing one hundred soveicigns in commemoration of having complotod 25 years' ministration in Greymouth parish. Besides visiting clergy, leading public citizens took parf, and the congratulations were most cordial. The ( Rev. Father O'Connol, on behalf of-his Lofdship Bishop Grimes,' conferred the honour on the Dean of Dean of Westland. Tho;Mayor, Hon. Mr. Guinness, and representative, citizens delivered complimentary speeches. ■ The Dean was warmly wcl'omed, and tho highest honour paid to him.
